The Xaverian Pen Pal Project is an initiative that aims to combat feelings of loneliness and isolation, while also promoting positive inter-generational relationships between StFX students and members of the Antigonish community.
Individuals are matched with a specially chosen pen pal based on factors like shared interests and given an opportunity to communicate regularly with their pen pal using email, telephone, traditional mail or video calling. The project is particularly interested in pairing older adults and elementary/high school aged students with pen pals, although all interested community members are invited to apply!
Disclaimer: This project is very graciously funded and supported by St. Francis Xavier University's McKenna Centre for Leadership
The recent Coronavirus outbreak has sparked major changes in our daily lives, not only within the St. FX community but on an international scale. The challenges facing us are truly unprecedented, with all of us facing new challenges. In particular, new social distancing measures can leave us feeling more isolated than ever.
In order to combat feelings of isolation, the Xaverian Pen Pal Project aims to partner up St. FX students with Antigonish residents in order to promote social solidarity and build resilient relationships within our community.
As a St. FX student-athlete, I am lucky to witness first-hand the incredibly special community that St. FX has built, not simply within the university, but through our relationships with the community of Antigonish. This close-knit community is like no other and now, more than ever, it is vital to come together and support one another.
