July to September 2020 I had the opportunity to participate in an artist residency, right here in my home town of Antigonish. My residency was with The All – Of –Us Society for Art Presentation (ASAP).
During my residency, I created a performance art piece that reflected themes of my personal journey of Black motherhood and moving through an ongoing global war of anti-Black racism, COVID -19 pandemic, trauma, and struggle for equality. The performance art piece allowed me to experiment with dye, clothe and sound.
My performance art piece " Seeds of Survival " was set in an outdoor public space.
The creation of this performance art piece challenged me as an artist because I never did anything like this before.
It was an artistic connection to my historical and current struggles, a visual representation of Black motherhood and the need to be free of negative and controlling societal images of Blackness. It is was also a reflection of the triumphs of Black women in the creation and preservation of positive self-definitions of Blackness for ourselves and our children. The art piece also contained an audio soundtrack that paid tribute to local freedom fighters and highlighted the voices of the children. The seeds of survival.
I would encourage you to check out ASAP – The All –Of-Us Society for Art Presentation. They are dedicated to creating opportunities for o BIPOC individuals and 2SLGBTQIA+ artists
ASAP is dedicated to the production, presentation, and promotion of contemporary art through exhibitions, residencies, and educational events.
